The South Carolina Book Festival will be held this weekend, February 27 – March 1, at the Convention Center in Columbia, SC.
I’ll be sitting on a panel discussing “Different Takes on Faith” with two other writers at 11:20 a.m. Saturday, February 28, in Congaree Meeting Room A & B. I’ll be signing copies of Bulletproof Faith after the panel. Then, at 4:30 p.m., I’ll be reading from the book in Richland Meeting Room C.
Ahead of the event, The State newspaper in Columbia, has included me in a story running in today’s paper.
I hope you’ll be able to attend if you’re near Columbia this weekend. Be sure to stop in and say hi!
We had a great time at the last couple of stops on the book tour in the Asheville area.
The crowd at Malaprop's in Asheville
On Saturday, January 17, the cafe at Malaprop’s Bookstore was packed for my talk and reading. The audience had great questions. There was even a dissenter among the crowd who questioned the veracity of my Christianity. I know he disagreed with homosexuality as well, but was more concerned with my “heretical” view of Christianity. That’s cool. I don’t mind the label “heretic” – many people – including Jesus had their faith and beliefs questioned so I stand in good company. My detractor did buy a book and I signed it for him. Without knowing it, he proved many of the points in the book and gave me the opportunity to show grace to an “enemy” and practice the principles outlined in the book. Someone suggested I take him with me to each signing to give an object lesson on how to handle “enemies.” Not a bad idea!
The FCC Hendersonville crowd
On Sunday, Wanda and I had the pleasure of visiting First Congregational Church in Hendersonville, NC. The pastor Richard Weidler had been gracious enough to invite me to speak at their Adult Forum before service. We had another full and attentive room, with little controversy. We stayed for service and were blessed by Rev. Weidler’s message and the warm welcome we received. Special thanks to Rich and Clay for opening their beautiful mountain home to us for a luncheon afterward. We had such a great time and met many beautiful children of God. FCC Hendersonville has recently become an Open and Affirming congregation within the UCC. I sit on the board of the UCC Coalition for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns and we’re proud to have such vibrant congregations doing this important work in places like Hendersonville where the need for welcoming congregations is great.
I’ve uploaded audio from the Malaprop’s book event as well as my talk at FCC in Hendersonville. Enjoy!
I’m still booking appearances into March and April. I’m happy to come and visit your church or bookstore, so contact me!
There are also more photos of Asheville as well as other book events at my Facebook page. Also, please become a fan of Bulletproof Faith on Facebook.
This weekend I’ll be in Anaheim, California for the Gay Christian Network conference.
I’ll be presenting the workshop that started it all – Spiritual Self-Defense for Gay and Lesbian Christians.
If you’re there – stop by and say hi – and buy a book!
Next weekend, I’ll be in Asheville, NC. On Saturday, January 17 at 7 p.m. I’ll be doing a book signing and reading at Malaprop’s Bookstore.
Then, Sunday morning, January 18, at 9:45 a.m. I’ll be giving a presentation on the book at First Congregational Church in Hendersonville. Come for the presentation and stick around for the worship service!
More dates to come. If you’d like me to come to your area, drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org
Hi all, I’ve added a couple of more dates to my appearance schedule. If you’re in the area, please come and say, “Hi!” Oh, and buy a book or two!
- December 7, 2008: Virginia-Highland Church, Atlanta, GA. I’ll be preaching on Sunday. This is historic because this is the formerly Southern Baptist church that my father pastored in the early 1970s. I never thought I’d have a chance to preach there. Come see history in the making if you’re in Atlanta!
- February 27 – March 1, 2009: South Carolina Book Festival, Columbia, SC. This is my first appearance at any book festival and I’m excited. Please come out and see me if you’re in the area!
Keep up with all upcoming appearances here!
